JPG compared with its AVIF re-encoding
JPG is widely compatible and lossy. Its source pixels are opaque, so converting it to a format that supports alpha does not create transparency.
AVIF uses efficient modern compression and may reduce delivery size at similar perceived quality. The result depends on the original JPG and settings, and support in older software can be limited.
Quality across two lossy encodings
The browser first decodes the JPG, then applies a new lossy AVIF encoding. Existing blocking, ringing or softened detail may remain and can become more visible at a low AVIF quality.
The width and height are preserved. Because JPG has no alpha channel, the output starts fully opaque even though AVIF itself can support transparency.
