Convert AVIF to PNG when you need a broadly supported, lossless-encoded image or must preserve transparent pixels through an alpha channel. The decoded pixel dimensions stay the same, but the PNG will often be larger than the compact AVIF source. Use it for editing, interface assets or compatibility rather than for smaller delivery files.
When PNG is the useful output
- Keep transparent and partially transparent pixels when the AVIF decoder exposes an alpha channel.
- Create a PNG that design tools and older workflows are more likely to open than AVIF.
- Avoid a second lossy encoding step: this converter writes PNG without a quality slider.
How it works
- Choose one valid AVIF image.
- Check the decoded preview, dimensions and transparency.
- Convert and download the new PNG file.
AVIF compared with PNG for the next step
AVIF is designed for efficient modern delivery and can store transparency, so it is usually the smaller choice when the destination supports it.
PNG uses lossless compression and supports a full alpha channel. It is practical for logos, interface assets and editing workflows, but photo-sized PNG files can be substantially larger.
Lossless output, alpha and file size
The AVIF is decoded to pixels and then encoded as PNG. PNG encoding does not introduce new compression artefacts, but it cannot recover detail already discarded when the AVIF was created.
Transparent pixels remain transparent when present in the decoded source. Conversion does not add transparency to an opaque AVIF, and it preserves the original width and height.

Local AVIF decoding
The AVIF decoder and PNG encoder run in this browser tab. ImageNexo does not receive the source image or the generated PNG.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. AVIF decoding and PNG encoding run locally in your browser, so the image is not sent to ImageNexo.
Will converting to PNG change image quality?
PNG encoding does not add compression artefacts, but it cannot restore detail already discarded from the AVIF source.
Does AVIF to PNG preserve transparency?
Yes. If the decoded AVIF contains transparent or partially transparent pixels, the PNG output preserves them through its alpha channel.
Will the PNG be larger than the AVIF?
Often, especially for photographs. AVIF is usually more space-efficient, while PNG uses lossless compression; the exact difference depends on the image.
Is AVIF to PNG lossless?
The PNG encoding step is lossless, so it does not add new compression artefacts. It cannot restore detail that was already lost in the AVIF source.
Does conversion change the image dimensions?
No. This converter keeps the decoded AVIF width and height.
Why convert AVIF to PNG?
Use PNG when the receiving app does not accept AVIF, when lossless re-saving matters, or when you need transparent pixels in a widely supported format.
